I finished my screenplay!!!
I finished my screenplay! I finished my screenplay!
I've already shared this with a lot of people. Now it's time to share it with the world.
At 4:45 pm on Sunday, March 2, 2008 I finished my screenplay!
I'm so excited that I'm bouncing off walls. It took two years to birth this baby. My roommate was pacing out on the patio waiting for me to finish. We popped a bottle of bubbly with dinner to celebrate. A total of 127 pages from FADE IN: to FADE OUT.
I spent the entire weekend writing. Thanks go out to my roommates for making sure that I ate and slept through the process. And thanks also for putting up with the loud music, ice crunching and pretzel munching; my preferred writing environment. Also thanks go out to friends who allowed me the opportunity to house-sit and the friend who invited me to vacation at his place so I could add to the word count. And a special thanks goes to the members of my writing group for all their suggestions, comments and support.
I've already started the second draft and it starts in the middle of the action instead of the reminiscent opening scene of the original movie (hey, I had to start somewhere to get this thing rolling). The new scene gave me the opportunity to show my protagonist in a much more "professional" light (pardon the pun for those of you who know the titles of my screenplay and the original).
There are typos, and things I still need to research, a couple of plot lines I need to develop from the beginning and a new plot line I threw in at the end that I need to work through the piece but all in all I really like what I've written. It took two long tedious years to finish because I was afraid that I would have to kill off my main character in the end but I didn't, though someone did die, which surprised me. That's my favorite part of writing: even though I'm the author of the silly thing, the characters find a way to surprise even me. I cried when I wrote the ending. My wish is that others who read it find it as powerful as I did.
The powers that be may not like that I've written about their characters but I knew when I saw the original that I had to write a sequel. To get it produced, I may have to change quit a bit of stuff but I've written it the way I wanted it and I'm finished. That's a huge accomplishment for me. And I may even bite the bullet and submit, after the second draft of course. My inner editor has a big problem with perfectionism - it's never perfect enough to send out. But this time it feels different.
And I've finished in time to tackle ScriftFrenzy 2008, being held in April this year. Still trying to figure out which script idea to work on this year but I'll definitely be working on the second draft in the meanwhile. Thanks to all of you who have put up with me droning on and on about this thing. Your prayers and good wishes gave me encouragement when I needed it most.
